National statistics
  • Alcohol is the adolescent drug of choice. About two in five eighth graders have consumed alcohol in their lifetime. 17 percent of eighth graders report using alcohol in the past month—more than cigarettes and marijuana combined.
  • Of adults who started drinking before age 15, approximately 40% say they have signs of alcohol dependence.
  • There are an estimated 10.8 million underage drinkers in the U.S.
  • 11 percent of eight graders have engaged in binge drinking (consuming five or more drinks on a single occasion). 29% of 12 graders report doing so.

Panhandle statistics

  • 6% of sixth graders, 9% of eight graders, 26% of sophomores and 36% of seniors surveyed reported having consumed alcohol in the past 30 days.
  • 74% of Panhandle high school students have tried alcohol by the time they graduate
  • When asked about the location of the last time they drank alcohol, 47% of seniors surveyed said they drank at someone else’s home without parent or guardians permission.
  • 28% of seniors reported to have rode in a vehicle with someone who had been drinking alcohol.
  • 24% of Panhandle seniors reported binge drinking (consuming 5 or more drinks in a row) in the past two weeks.
